Tezpur Tourism

Tezpur is an important city of Assam and also serves as the administrative headquarters of the Sonitpur district. Situated on the banks of river Brahmaputra, this ancient city is known for its mythology, folklore and legends. The place derives its name from the Sanskrit words, 'Teza' meaning blood and 'Pura' meaning city or town. This is because it is believed that a battle between Lord Krishna and the Asura king Banasura, known as the Sonitpur, was fought in Tezpur only. Since thousands of people were killed in the battle and the whole city was flooded with human blood, the place came to be known as Tezpur.

This age old city of Tezpur, known for its splendid natural beauty and archeological ruins, is an absolute delight for every tourist as well as nature lover. The urban center of Guwahati is only about 180 kms from this place and the entire city is set amidst snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas, lush tea gardens and the innumerous hillocks of the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Tezpur is regarded as the cultural capital of Assam. The city is, in fact, renowned for being the birthplace of many renowned artists, such as Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala (1903-51), Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha (1909-69), Phani Sarma (1909-70), Ananda Chandra Agarwala (1874-1939). It is also the birth Place of former speaker of Indian Parliament, Somnath Chatterjee. Presently, Tezpur also serves as a commercial, administrative and educational centre of Assam, apart from housing a major base of the Indian Army and Airforce (Salonibari). Last, but not the least, it is known for housing some of the best tea gardens in Assam.

Bamuni Hills
Bamuni is a beautiful hill adorned with abundant greenery, ancient rock carvings and stone figurines. The place is also known for its ancient ruins. There is a Bhairavi Temple which is believed to be the ruins of an ancient shrine that dates back to the 9th – 10th century. At present, the historical site in Tezpur is under the administration of the Archaeological Survey of India. Along with that, Bamuni also includes the inspiring stone statues and carvings of the bygone era.

Agnigarh
A beautiful mountain with historical significance, Agnigarh is located on the northern bank of Brahmaputra River. This hillock was once the fortress and presently, it serves as a gorgeous hill-garden adorned with the exquisite landscape and statues. The legend has it; this place was once surrounded by fire so that no one could go in or out of the fortress.

District Museum
Situated in the downtown of the city, District Museum was established in the year 1986. It’s the Dak Bungalow (a historical building from the British era) that houses the rich collection of this museum in Tezpur. The museum holds a collection of more than 600 objects which include wooden artefacts, sculpture, textiles, paintings, copper plate, manuscripts, inscriptions, and more. Craftwork from the Satra institutions is also put up on a display that depicts the significance of neo-Vaishnavism.

Mahabhairab Temple
An ancient shrine in Tezpur, Mahabhairab Temple is said to be built by King Bana. The temple is believed to be constructed between the 8th and 10th century, although many modifications have been done over the ages. For the fact, the Shivalinga inside the temple is said to be the largest of its kind in the world. On the pious occasion of Shivaratri, the temple witnesses a large gathering of devotees from every nook and corner of the country.

Chitralekha Udyan
Established in the year 1904, Chitralekha Udyan, also known as Cole Park, is one of the most peaceful attractions in Tezpur. The park is named after Chitralekha – a famous person in Aniruddha Usha mythological love story. It is known for its scenic beauty and a beautiful lake where one can indulge in a boating experience. The park also has restaurants for the tourists.

Bura-Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary
Some 41 km south of Tezpur city, Bura-Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary is a renowned wildlife attraction. Founded in the year 1995, Bura-Chapori is a paradise for bird watchers. The sanctuary is home to various bird species, reptiles and other wild animals. Bengal florican, mallard, whistling duck, openbill stork, black-neck stork and teal are some common feathered creatures that can be seen here. Besides, Indian one-horned rhino, wild buffalo, leopard, hog deer, tiger, and wild pigs are mammals that reside in the sanctuary.

Hazara Pukhuri
The third largest water tank in the region and a popular sightseeing spot in Tezpur is Hazara Pukhuri. Sprawling over an extensive area of 70 acres of land, this place is an ideal picnic spot, and hence, people often come here with family to spend quality time. This reservoir has got its name from a famous personality, Hazara Varman. Near this place, there is another tank, known as Padum Pukhuri, which is also visited by tourists.
